Hook and band hinges are a lift off type hinge and are known by a number of names, the hanging bracket can be called a gudgeon pin, hook, or pintle. The hinge leaf can be referred to as a strap, band, or even a crook (as in a shepherds crook due to its shape). What ever you call them these hinges are ideal for gates, garage doors, barn doors, and out-buildings.

What on earth is a Gudgeon? I am hear you ask, well apart from being a small edible fish, or a slang term for a fool; when it comes to hinges the technical term for a hinge pin is a pintle, and the pintle fits in to a round socket called the gudgeon.

Gudgeon hooks and band hinges are easy to fit, the steel strap or band looped at one end is fastened to the door or gate with screws and a coach-bolt and the loop sits on a pin mounted on a plate that is fitted to the door frame or gate post.

Hook and strap hinges are available in two types, straight straps and cranked or necked straps, straight straps will hang the door or gate in front of the frame or gate post, typically fitted to the ledges of a ledged and braced gate or door, allowing the panelling to be flush with the frame or post when closed. Cranked straps will hang the door or gate flush with the post or frame.
